Courses in art, English, and mathematics can help students develop skills necessary for photography, such as composition and technical understanding. Some programs may recommend or require coursework in digital media or graphic design. Portfolio: A portfolio showcasing the applicant’s photographic work is usually required. This portfolio should demonstrate the applicant’s creativity, technical skills, and ability to capture compelling images across different themes or genres (e.g., portrait, landscape, abstract). The portfolio may also include work that showcases the applicant’s proficiency with both film and digital photography, as well as post-processing skills. Standardized Tests: SAT or ACT scores may be required for admission, although many art-focused programs emphasize the portfolio over standardized test scores. If required, strong performance in the reading and writing sections can be helpful, especially in terms of conveying ideas in a creative and critical manner. Skills and Competencies: Basic proficiency in photography, including understanding exposure, composition, and lighting. Familiarity with photographic equipment, such as DSLR or mirrorless cameras, and editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. Creative and critical thinking skills to conceptualize and execute compelling photographs. Strong visual communication and storytelling abilities. Attention to detail and the ability to work with different lighting conditions, settings, and subjects. Other Requirements: Recommendation letters from teachers, particularly those in art, media, or design disciplines, can be helpful. A personal statement explaining the applicant’s passion for photography, their creative process, and career goals in the field. Some programs may require an interview or additional photography assignments to further assess the applicant’s skill set.
